"Life throws up surprises when you least expect it. A radiologist detected a tumour in my renal area during a random check at Tezpur on 23rd February last. Quite obviously, there was panic.
My wife called up her doctor-friends for advice. And help they did. I was admitted to the Health City Hospital, Guwahati on 24th February. It felt like a home away from home. Tests were done and on the same day it was confirmed by the doctors that the tumour was benign, and thus there was no need to worry. It was also detected that I had a slightly enlarged appendix. There was no need for immediate surgery for the tumour. However, it was advisable. I was thus prepared for the two surgeries.
The infrastructure of the hospital is impressive. The facilities, at least in the eyes of a layman like me, are comparable with the best in the country. In terms of cleanliness and hygiene standards the hospital would definitely rank very high. It is good to see that Guwahati has a hospital of this kind, with staff who are imbued with a deep sense of professionalism and high ethical standards. And the best part is, everyone from the doctors to the janitors are committed to their tasks.
Dr. Brojen Barman performed the adrenelectomy while Dr. Pranjit Khanikar did the lap appendicectomy. Both are young, competent surgeons who have the ability to instill confidence in their patients. Dr. Barman explained to me the whole process of the surgical intervention. I am never going to forget the words of Dr. Barman as he prepared me for the surgery. Assam can have a lot of expectations from young surgeons like Dr. Barman.
The surgeries were performed on 26th February. They took time, close to 4 and ½ hours. But everything went off well. The day after the surgeries I could walk to the toilet on my own. This is just an indication of how smoothly everything went.
The real help and mental support came from Juri’s three friends – Dr. Chandana Sharma, Dr. Kalpana Choudhury and Dr. Bikash Choudhury. They are not just brilliant doctors, all three of them, but wonderful human beings. I believe that they represent the new generation of healthcare professionals who support the patients not just with the help of technology but with loving care. They are doctors who are not shy of showing their emotions so that patients feel connected to them. They are my friends too now and I cannot help being proud of my three new friends and of what they have achieved. I am also grateful to Dr. Chandan J. Das from AIIMS, Delhi. I have never met him but his reassuring words comforted my wife.
Apart from them, there was good old Anindita Das, of course. She stood by me and my wife as she has always done. I am not going to belittle our friendship by thanking her. Nor am I going to thank Kalyan Bania or Zerine Wahid or the many other friends from India and abroad who kept praying for us during these testing times.
We got back home on the 1st of March. Everything is okay now. Doctors have advised rest for a month. Friends, family members and students should not feel bad that I could not contact them individually about these developments. But I’m perfectly fine now. The cuts are healing fast. I should be able to resume normal activities very soon."
