Health City Guwahati Blood Bank is a licensed Blood Bank which started functioning from April 2018. We got NABH Blood Bank accreditation on September 2018 , within six months of its functioning. We, at Health City Guwahati Blood Bank, are committed to provide quality blood and blood components collected from non-remunerated healthy donors by qualified and skilled personnel under stringent process control to ensure patient safety by rational use of blood and blood components. The Blood Bank gives service 24 hours a day and provides a wide range of facilities under a single roof that includes- Packed Red Cell Concentrate, Fresh Frozen Plasma, Platelet Concentrate, Plasma and Cryoprecipitate. The Blood Bank is well equipped with all the latest and advanced equipment required for collection, processing, storage and issue of blood and blood components. Blood grouping and antibody screening are done using fourth-generation, fully automated Immunohematology analyser - Immucor NEO. Screening for transfusion transmitted infections are done using fully automated analyser that uses ElectroChemiLuminescence (ECL) and Enhanced Chemiluminescence (ECI) technologies. In addition to this, the donated blood is also tested for viral markers using Nucleic Acid Amplification test (NAAT) which narrows the so called window period – after- a donor is infected by HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C but –before- the condition is detectable by routine methods. Apart from the above facilities, we are introducing shortly Apheresis procedures for collection of various blood components- Platelets, RBCs, Plasma, Leucocytes and Peripheral Blood Stem Cells. Apheresis allows for selective removal of the required blood component and return of the rest to the donor’s blood stream. It is useful for collection of donor blood component as well as for the treatment of certain medical conditions in which a part of the blood that contains disease provoking elements is removed. We are also introducing irradiation of blood components using Linear Accelerator of the Radiotherapy department of our hospital. Irradiation reduces the risk of Transfusion associated Graft versus Host Disease and makes transfusion of cellular blood components safer. This is especially a boon for the immunocompromised patients and patients receiving blood transfusion from close relative donors especially in case of rare blood groups.
