Nuclear Medicine & PET-CT
Nuclear medicine is a specialized field that uses small amounts of radioactive substances (radiopharmaceuticals) to diagnose, monitor, and sometimes treat various diseases — including cancer, thyroid disorders, and cardiac conditions. Unlike traditional imaging that captures anatomical structures, nuclear medicine enables us to observe biological function at the molecular and cellular level, helping detect disease in its earliest stages.
Radionuclides such as Technetium, Gallium, Iodine, Xenon, and Thallium are administered through oral, IV, or inhalation routes, depending on the organ system being examined. This highly targeted approach allows specialists to assess:
- Tumor activity and spread
- Organ function (e.g., kidney, thyroid, heart)
- Bone and joint abnormalities
- Response to cancer treatment

What is PET/CT?
PET/CT combines the strengths of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) with those of Computed Tomography (CT) to produce images that can be used to help diagnose a number of diseases. PET is non-invasive, nuclear medicine procedure that is able to detect certain diseases before other imaging modalities by visualizing the metabolic processes occurring in the body. By injecting a radioactive tracer into the body and tracking the tracer’s distribution, PET is able to identify chemical and physiological changes related to metabolism.
