Clinical Haematology & Haemato-oncology

Established by Assam Gaurav awardee Dr. Asif Iqbal in the year 2018. We take honoured to be the North East India's first successful Bone Marrow Transplantation in the year under the leadership of Dr. Asif Iqbal.

Welcome to the Clinical Haematology & Haemato-oncology Department at Health City Hospital

We provide a caring and friendly environment where we deliver an efficient, up to date and integrated haematology service to our patients.

When you are referred to the Haematology Unit, you will be allocated a haematology consultant, who will manage your care with a team of other specialist haematology doctors. At your clinic appointments you will either see your consultant or another haematology doctor who is

working with your consultant. The haematology clinics are located in Outpatients second Floor

.If you are unable to attend your clinic appointment please Ask receptionist as soon as you are able and we will ensure you have another appointment. The team will try to keep waiting times to a minimum but unexpected emergencies may interrupt the appointment system. This can be frustrating, but your understanding and patience is appreciated at such times.

Outpatient day unit

Not all patients with a blood or bone marrow disorder need to have treatment on the inpatient ward. It may be possible for you to have treatment over weeks or months, as a day

case patient. This will be explained to you by your consultant and your clinical nurse specialist. Sometimes, if you become unwell or if your treatment requires inpatient

facilities, admission to the inpatient ward may be necessary. We will endeavour to admit you to Haematology Cabin, Ward or ICU but depending on bed availability, this may not

always be possible and treatment may be given on another ward in the hospital.

Outpatient Day Unit opening times / contact details

Mondays to Fridays, 9am-5pm.

When the Day Unit is closed, please contact the Accident and Emergency department – First Floor.

Haematology multi-

Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT)

The multi-disciplinary team

The multi-disciplinary team (MDT) is a team of healthcare professionals with the necessary skills, experience and expertise to diagnose and treat haematological or oncological malignancies. All of them play a part in supporting you and your family throughout your care. MDT meetings are held weekly within the hospital or regionally by video conference to share expertise.

Some of the team you may meet include:

The haematologist: A doctor who is an expert in treating cancer of the blood/bone marrow and/or immune system, as well as other blood disorders.

The clinical oncologist: A doctor who specialises in treating cancer of other organs as well as some of the blood/bone marrow and/or immune system. They also specialise in administering radiotherapy.

The clinical nurse specialist: A nurse who is an expert in the care and support of people with blood disorders/cancers. The clinical nurse specialist can also help you understand anything you might need to know.

The research nurse: A nurse who is responsible for providing information to patients about clinical trials and organising treatment and follow-up care whilst on such trials.

The radiologist: A doctor who is an expert in interpreting x-rays and special scans which provide important information for diagnosing and treating cancer.

The histopathologist: A doctor who is an expert in looking at biopsy specimens under the microscope to determine the exact type and nature of the lymphoma.

The clinical health psychologist: A psychologist who specialises in helping people cope with and adjust to the emotional impact that can accompany serious physical illness.

You come first

Everyone in the MDT meets on a regular basis. We will discuss your diagnosis and work out what is thought to be the best treatment for you. Whenever possible, your case will be discussed in the MDT before you start treatment.

We want you to be confident about your treatment plan. That’s why we hope you will want to talk to us and tell us what is important for you. We will always tell you everything you want to know about your condition. When the MDT has discussed your case, your doctor will see you in clinic to discuss the proposed treatment options. In some urgent cases treatment may need to be started without prior discussion at the MDT meeting. In these cases the clinician will try to discuss treatment plans with the other members of the MDT.

Any questions?

If you are worried or do not understand something you have heard, your clinical nurse specialist (or research nurse if you are on a clinical trial) is there to help. Your nurse will act as your key worker throughout your care with us and will be a point of contact for information and advice. The nurse will provide a consultation between yourself and the other members of the MDT if you have any questions.
